DCBiotech

at McKinley Technology High School and Ballou Senior High School

In partnership with the DCPS Office of Career Pathways and supported in part by the National Science Foundation, this program provides teachers with rigorous content and practical background in biotechnology for grades 10, 11 and 12. Workplace skills in laboratory, Internet, mathematics, and communication are emphasized to prepare DC students for the wide variety of 21st Century technical careers that use and/or relate to biotechnology.

Uniquely, the program integrates professional development for teachers with instruction of students. Pedagogy is modeled by the CASE professional staff. Teachers are introduced to strategies for connecting biotechnology with basics of biology, chemistry, and math aligned with DCPS content standards. Teachers learn techniques to adapt lesson plans including authentic assessments for content and technical accomplishment.

The program is enriched by field trips to work sites and school visits by professionals that give a first-hand look into the biotechnology workplace.

The instructors are CASE professional staff with extensive experience teaching biotechnology at the high school level and working in the local (DC metropolitan area) biotechnology industry. The lab manual and text are "Biotechnology: Science for the New Millennium" by Ellyn Daugherty and published by EMC/Paradigm.
